Musée de la Libération de Cherbourg (50)
The musée de la Libération is housed in a former Second Empire fort on Roule Mountain, at an altitude of 110m (the highest point in Haut Contentin).
The museum was opened in 1954 by President René Coty and was entirely refurbished in 1994, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Normandy Landings.
This museum retraces the history of the German occupation, the Allied landings and the liberation of Cherbourg and Contentin. |

| | | The tour begins in the basement of the fort, and goes through rooms with themes such as occupation, exile, German propaganda, the Vichy government, the Resistance, and the Atlantic Wall. The first floor tells the stories of the difficult liberation of Cherbourg and the Arsenal (25th and 27th June, 1944), the disastrous state of Cherbourg port after the Germans had left (destroyed before the 22nd June by the Nazis, so that it could not be of any use), and its vital importance in the continued war effort. |
