“The Remembrance Walk”, from Bitola to Thessaloniki

Corps 1

In 2018, to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, three French travellers (Marc Renversé, Emmanuel Rimbert and Emmanuel Hecht) and their two Macedonian guides (Petar Nolev and Vendim) walked the 240 kilometres from Bitola, in North Macedonia, to Thessaloniki, in Greece, in the footsteps of the French soldiers who fought on the Eastern Front.

Following this ten-day remembrance journey, Aleksandar Stojchev, director of the Skopje Military Museum, embarked on a research project in his museum’s photographic archives in order to draw a parallel between past and present.

His research, together with the impressions and travel photos of the Franco-Macedonian team, culminated in October 2020 in the presentation of an exhibition titled “The Eastern Front, today and yesterday”, designed and produced by Aleksandar Stojchev and Emmanuel Rimbert, director of the Institut Français in Skopje, with support from the French Embassy in Skopje, the Institut Français in Skopje and the Military Museum of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of North Macedonia.
